آشکارگر گاز (Gas Detector) یا نشت یاب گاز یکی از ابزارهای ایمنی و بازرسی در محیط های فنی و صنعتی، و خصوصاً در شرایطی است که نشتی گاز ولو در سطح محدود می تواند آسیب هایی جدی بر فرایندهای جاری یا جدید وارد کند. این آسیب ها می توانند از دو نوع باشند:

- زمانی که ما در یک محیط صنعتی در حال انجام کار گرم هستیم و فرایندهای مربوط به آن تولید اشتعال و احتراق می کنند، تصادف ذرات گازی با حرارت و جرقه های ناشی از این کار گرم می تواند تبعاتی سنگین نظیر آتش سوزی، احتراق یا حتی انفجار را به همراه داشته باشد. در این شرایط ممکن است با توجه به غلظت پایین گاز نشت شده متوجه بروز نشتی نشوند اما آثار آن خود را در قالب یک سانحه نشان دهد. بنابراین بهتر است در محیط های کار فرایندهای بازرسی نشتی انجام شود. 

- در زمانی که گاز موجود در خط لوله یا مخزن ضریب خطرات ایمنی و بهداشتی و زیست محیطی مشهودی داشته باشد باید از هر ساز و کار پیشگیرانه و اقدامات ضروری حین بروز نشتی استفاده کرد. برای مثال نشتی گاز ترش یا H2S تبعات بسیار مخربی برای هر واحد صنعتی به همراه خواهد داشت و باید از بروز و گسترش آن ممانعت شود. 

بنابراین نشتی یابی گاز یکی از فرایندهای حساس در محیط های صنعتی محسوب می شود، خاصه آن که بازرسی چشمی این سیال میسر نیست و نیروی کار و تیم های بازرسی تنها زمانی متوجه نشتی می شوند که حجم بالایی از گاز در یک محیط فشرده شده است.
